We are back! The Derrick Dolls made their comeback in 1993. We were under the direction of Myrna Santos Smith and Choreographer Barbie Parker and the team had a clear image. Barbie gave the team a sexy, sophisticated style of dance. We even had a certain strut on and off the field that was "Barbie Style". The new uniforms went from a conservative one piece in 1992 to a two piece with high-heeled white boots, big, heavy poms and fringe. Uniforms were created, once again, by Kay King. The 1993 team had the honor of cheering for some of the most elite NFL players of all time including Hall of Famers Warren Moon, Bruce Matthews and Mike Munchak to name a few. The season had a 11 game winning streak dominating the regular season. This team was the last time Houston would see a NFL playoff game. Houston did not see a playoff game again until 2012 with the Houston Texans.
The 1st performance was a preseason game in the Alamodome, San Antonio, TX where the Oilers won the Governor’s cup against Texas rival the Dallas Cowboys. It was a great start to an even better season. Derrick Dolls made their debut with a performance of “God Bless Texas” that was a crowd pleaser. There was a buzz all over the city with a winning team that was reminiscent of the “Luv Ya Blue” days. More appearances were in demand including both football players and Derrick Dolls. Businesses, radio stations, television appearances, modeling shows, newspaper articles etc were mixed in with practices and games, which made for a busy year for this squad. Practices were held in the Texas Club downtown Houston and field practices were at Rice University. Most of the Derrick Dolls were either full-time college students or held down a full-time job. Therefore, all of their practices were in the evening from 6 to 10 p.m.
On game days, Dolls would arrive and catch the bus at the Oilers office on Fannin before the sun would come up in order to have practice time in the Astrodome. After we practiced, we headed to the locker room to eat and prepare for the game. Visible Changes stylist were present to fix our hair for game time. Every game we cheered for was a sold out crowd.
Derrick Dolls performed both a pre-game routine and then make a tunnel for the Oilers entrance onto the field. Every time an Oiler's number and name would be announced. We would ripple our poms when they ran between our two lines. Once the game began we broke into four squads rotating every quarter. The squad captains would call the cheers and count-down when our small dance routines were on the loudspeaker. We also had a show troup that would perform at various events around town, at one game four members of our show troupe performed the National Anthem, they were Veronique Shipley, Terri Miller Brent, Tina Eisenbarth Glidewell and Jamelyn Williams. Our Squad Captains were Janet Mosaku, Zondria Jackson, Sheri Pool, and Susan Boldman, we later added Dayna B. Fisher and Josette Fuentez.
Once the pre-game activities began, the Derrick Dolls were non-stop until the game ended. The Derrick Dolls would entertain the crowd during half time with a pom or high kick routine. One of our most famous high kick routines was to the song "God Bless Texas."
We formed lifelong friendships and a sisterhood that can never be forgotten... Yes! The Derrick Dolls were Definitely BACK!
